Viking cooktop model families
Viking cooktops split by fuel, and the prefix is the first step in any Viking cooktop repair. Gas drop-in cooktops use VGSU (VGSU53616BSS 36-inch six-burner, VGSU53015BSS 30-inch, VGSU5366BSS six sealed burners). Induction cooktops use VICU with MagneQuick elements (VICU53616BST 36-inch six-element, VICU53014BST 30-inch four-element). Electric radiant cooktops use VECU with QuickCook elements (VECU53616BSB 36-inch, VECU53014BSB 30-inch). Folded in here are the gas rangetops — a cooktop only, with no oven — using VGRT/VRT (VGRT7366BSS and VRT7366BSS 36-inch 7 Series, VGRT5364GSS and VRT5364GSS 36-inch with a griddle, VRT5366BSS six-burner).
What the technology means for service
A gas cooktop or rangetop uses sealed brass-port burners, VariSimmer for a gentle even low flame on every burner and SureSpark automatic ignition. The 7 Series rangetops carry Elevation Burners up to 23,000 BTU; the 5 Series use TruPowerPlus sealed burners up to 18,500 BTU, and many add a ViChrome interchangeable griddle. An induction VICU uses MagneQuick elements driven by an induction generator and interface board — the source of the LED Codes — while a VECU uses QuickCook radiant elements. The fuel decides both the parts and the diagnostic approach.
Reading the model and where to find it
The rating plate on a cooktop or rangetop is on the underside of the unit, accessible from the cabinet below. Record the full model string before booking so the correct igniter, burner cap, valve, induction element or radiant element is matched to your cooktop.
Gas, induction and the rangetop distinction
The three fuels suit different cooks and carry through to service. A gas VGSU gives an instant visible flame and a precise VariSimmer low setting but relies on igniters and caps that need occasional cleaning; an induction VICU is the most responsive and efficient, heating cookware directly, but needs induction-ready pans and is the most electronics-dependent — which is why only it shows the LED Codes; a VECU radiant top is the simplest. Remember that a VGRT/VRT rangetop is a cooktop with no oven, so its service never involves an oven cavity. Giving a technician the full model number ensures the right burner or element parts arrive.
