Viking grill model families
Viking outdoor grills split by generation, and the prefix is the first step in any Viking grill repair. The older stainless-burner generation uses VGBQ built-in and freestanding BBQ (VGBQ53024NSS 30-inch, VGBQ53624NSS and VGBQ53624LSS 36-inch NG/LP, VGBQ4122RTN 41-inch) and VGIQ Ultra-Premium with the TruSear infrared burner (VGIQ542241NSS 42-inch). The newer cast-brass-burner generation uses VQGI built-in ProSear (VQGI5361 36-inch, VQGI5421 42-inch, VQGI5541NSS 54-inch) and VQGFS freestanding cart (VQGFS536 36-inch, VQGFS5421 42-inch, VQGFS5540 54-inch). Do not conflate the older stainless burners with the newer cast-brass ProSear burners.
What the technology means for service
A Viking grill uses stainless or cast-brass burners, ceramic radiant briquettes, a Gourmet-Glo infrared rotisserie burner, and a ProSear or ProSear 2 sear burner on the newer VQGI or a TruSear infrared burner on the older VGIQ. Ignition is push-button or push-turn electronic, powered by a battery — not SureSpark. Identifying whether you own an older VGBQ/VGIQ or a newer VQGI/VQGFS tells a technician which burner set, igniter and sear or rotisserie module a repair involves, since the two generations use different parts.
Reading the model and where to find it
The rating plate is usually on the underside of the firebox, behind the control panel or inside a cart door. Record the full model string, including the NG or LP gas-type suffix, before booking so the correct burner, igniter, regulator or briquette tray is matched to your grill.
Built-in, freestanding and the burner generations
The generation and mount decide both how a grill cooks and how it is serviced. An older VGBQ or VGIQ uses stainless burners and, on the VGIQ, a TruSear infrared burner; a newer VQGI built-in or VQGFS cart uses cast-brass burners and a ProSear sear burner. A built-in drops into a masonry island, while a freestanding cart stands on its own legs. Because the burner sets differ between generations, telling a technician the exact model and gas type ensures the right burner and igniter parts arrive. You can browse comparable units on the grill models page.
