Viking microwave model families
Viking microwaves read by prefix, and the prefix is the first step in any Viking microwave repair. Over-range convection hood units — a 3-in-1 microwave, convection oven and ventilation hood — use VMOR (VMOR506SS 30-inch 5 Series, VMOR205SS Professional over-range convection hood). The 24-inch DrawerMicro models use VMOD (VMOD5240SS) and the convection DrawerMicro uses VMODC (VMODC5240SS). The retired conventional 24-inch unit used the VMOS prefix (VMOS501SS). The VMOC prefix is not confirmed against a live SKU and is not used here.
What the technology means for service
An over-range VMOR combines a microwave, a convection element and a ventilation blower with a cooktop light, so any of those subsystems can fail on its own. A drawer-style VMOD or VMODC opens from the front like a drawer and adds its own drawer mechanism and controls, with convection on the VMODC. Across the line the high-voltage components — the magnetron, the diode and the capacitor — drive the runs-but-won’t-heat symptom, and the door interlock drives the won’t-start symptom. Identifying the model tells a technician which subsystem and parts a repair involves.
Reading the model and where to find it
The rating plate is usually inside the door frame or on the back or side of the cabinet. Record the full model string before booking so the correct magnetron, diode, interlock, turntable motor or drawer part is matched to your microwave.
Over-range versus drawer
The mount decides both how a microwave is used and how it is serviced. An over-range VMOR sits above the cooktop and doubles as the ventilation hood, so a fan or light fault is part of its service; a drawer VMOD or VMODC installs below the counter and opens like a drawer, adding a drawer mechanism that can fail independently of the microwave itself.
